Maricopa police seized thousands of dollars in a traffic stop on State Route 347 yesterday, according to a city spokesperson.

Cops impounded the vehicle after an hours-long traffic stop yielded a massive cash seizure but no immediate criminal charges.

The driver of an unassuming commuter car made a traffic violation within city limits, said Monica Williams, spokesperson for the city’s emergency services.

Cops stopped the car travelling north on SR 347 between Casa Blanca Road and city limits where they suspected “other illicit activity,” Williams said.

While the Maricopa Police Department did not release further details, at least four police cruisers were spotted surrounding the commuter car on the highway shoulder around 5 p.m.

Maricopa police utilized a K-9 from Gila River Police Department during the search, where they seized several thousand dollars, Williams said.

Police were still on the scene at 8 p.m. before the vehicle was eventually impounded.

The driver was released with criminal charges pending. The investigation is ongoing.
