Maricopa High girls’ volleyball coach Paul Olson says the time is now to take a step back and work on the little things.

As the Rams search for their first victory of the season, the team won its first game last Tuesday in a 19-25, 25-15, 20-25, 12-25 loss against Santa Cruz Valley High. “We managed to get our first win in a game last Tuesday,” Olson said. “Unfortunately, we were unable to add to it and the night ended with a loss.”

For Maricopa, team leaders included Katie Meyer (7 aces, 7 kills), Madison Savoy (7 kills, 12 digs), Arielle Fife (3 blocks), Caroline Fayan (11 digs), Logan Fancher (3 assists) and Tabitha Hoctor (3 assists).

In action a day later, Maricopa fell to host Florence High by scores of 16-25, 16-25 and 3-25.

“At this point we are going to take a step back and work on the little things,” Olson continued. “If we can master the little things – being in the correct position, being mechanically sound, playing smart, disciplined volleyball – the big things like the score will take care of themselves.”

Maricopa is back in action this week as it hosts Coolidge High on Oct. 4.
