Maricopa High School, in partnership with the Maricopa Public Library, Maricopa Center for Entrepreneurship and the Maricopa Ak-Chin STEAM Foundation, has been awarded a $44,000 technology and services grant.

The grant is being supported by the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records and is receiving federal funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

It will be used to make a “Makerspace,” which uses innovative technology for participants to gather, create and learn.

It will include a 3D printer, computers, robotic kits, Arduino kits and other innovative technologies.

“It gives a place for students and community members to use the newest equipment,” MHS librarian Robin Shoup said.. “The 3D printer is the new thing in education and this is the way libraries are going.”

The grand opening of the new “Makerspace” area will be 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 16 in the Maricopa High School Library, 45012 W. Honeycutt Road.

The space will host a high school maker club from 2:45 to 4:45 p.m. on Mondays and will be open to the public from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and 3 to 6 p.m. on Thursdays.

“There has been a lot of enthusiasm from the students for this makerspace. It is a collaborative learning environment,” Shoup said.
