2 MHS softball players earn scholarships

Two Maricopa High School softball athletes have earned scholarships.

Senior softball pitcher and first baseman Alicia Portillo has been awarded a scholarship to Paradise Valley Community College. Alicia’s scholarship includes tuition and books and she will pitch and play first base in college.

Alicia was a mainstay on the varsity softball roster earning four varsity letters, and was voted team MVP every year. For her effort on the field in 2012, Alicia earned first team all-region, first team all-state 4AII and honorable mention all-Arizona.

Senior Christalyn Espanol, an outfielder and first baseman, has earned an athletic and academic scholarship to AIB College of Business in Des Moines, Iowa. Christalyn received the Eagles Scholarship, an academic award of $3,000 per year and a $1,500 softball scholarship per year.

She plans on playing either outfield or first base and majoring in sports and event management.
