MHS track team sets season bests

The Maricopa High School boys and girls track teams continued to build on early season success at the 12th annual Hohokam Invitational at Westwood High School in Mesa on Friday.

The Hohokam Invitational featured 30 teams from around the state. Most of the schools involved are much bigger and in the division above Maricopa. Despite the disadvantage, the boy’s team saw six season bests posted, and the girl’s team saw five.

The top moments for the boy’s day were the 4×800-meter relay team and the 4×400-meter relay team blowing away previous season bests. Both teams demonstrated why they will be a threat at the state meet. The 4×800-meter relay team has had success all season, but bested their previous top time by 11 seconds. The 4×400-meter relay team was firing on all cylinders and finished with the fourth fastest time for all of Arizona Interscholastic Association Division II so far this season.

“At the Hohokam [Invitational] we did well in what we targeted,” Maricopa High School boys track coach Brad Chamberlain said. “The boys 4×800 relay consisting of Jesse Gaines, Zach Chamberlain, Will Blocker, and Alan Potter posted a season best of 8:20, automatically qualifying them for the state meet.  The 4×400 relay of Chamberlain, Blocker, Elisha Donaldson, and Longman Pyne ran a season best of 3:29, ranking them fourth in the state in Division II.”

The boys team showed promise overall, but was only able to get points from the two relays teams. However, Ram athletes ran hard as new season bests were set in the 1,600-meter run, 3,200-meter run, 4×100-meter relay, and the high jump.

On the girl’s side of the track, junior Jada Wright continued her stellar year. Wright ran a season-best 2:26.34 in the 800-meter run. She scored the only two points in the meet for the girl’s team by finishing seventh amongst some of the state’s fastest runners.

***ADVERTISEMENT***However, Wright wasn’t alone in triumphing over her previous season best. Freshman Teresa Flores set a new season mark in the 3,200-meter run by finishing in 15:42.49. Sophomore Sinnette Richards joined in by setting team season bests in the high jump, triple jump and long jump.

In a meet where MHS was up against much larger schools in the state, they showed grit and determination. The Rams will look to build off the confidence and momentum gained from this meet as they continue their run to the state meet.

The Rams compete today in the Sedona Invitational.
