A person was killed in a crash near Alterra Parkway this morning.

A Maricopa police officer tried to stop a motorcycle traveling south on John Wayne Parkway, according to a city statement.

The rider initially stopped near John Wayne Parkway and Honeycutt Road, but reportedly fled and continued south on John Wayne Parkway before crashing near North Alterra Parkway. The rider died at the scene.

Maricopa police are withholding the name of the deceased at this time to allow for appropriate family notifications.

Due to the nature of the collision, Pinal County Sheriff’s Office’s Vehicular Crimes Unit was asked to assist in the investigation, which is ongoing. Coolidge police were also seen on the scene.

Two southbound lanes of John Wayne Parkway at North Alterra Parkway, as well as the eastbound and westbound lanes of North Alterra Parkway, have been closed through the night while detectives gather necessary information.

This is the second motorcyclist killed in traffic in Maricopa in the last 12 days.

On Jan. 20, 47-year-old Jordan Piergrossi was killed in a suspected DUI manslaughter on Honeycutt Road. No arrests have been made in that case yet.

This is a breaking story. We will provide updates as we gather more information.
