Input sought on kindergarten cuts; school closure

The Maricopa Unified School District is asking parents, guardians and community members to attend one of two meetings Wednesday to discuss the possible need to eliminate all-day kindergarten or close a school.

Superintendent Steve Chestnut said the district currently is in the process of determining the budget for the 2013-2014 school year and must cut $1.5 million from its $29 million operating budget because of several consecutive years of state budget cuts.

If the decision is made to eliminate all-day kindergarten parents would have the option of paying tuition for the second half of the day.

The public is invited to two Parent/Community Coffees with Chestnut, one at 10 a.m. in the Governing Board Room, 44150 W. Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway, and the second identical one at 7 p.m. in the library at Santa Cruz Elementary School, 19845 N. Costa del Sol Blvd. in Tortosa.

Community members are invited to bring their own coffee.
