Parents can register their kindergarten students for the 2013-14 school year 5 to 7 p.m. Jan. 29 at all six elementary schools in the Maricopa Unified School District.

The school district currently is in the process of determining the budget for the 2013-14 school year and is possible free, all-day kindergarten will not be offered because the state no longer pays for all-day programs.

If the decision is to provide kindergarten on a half-day schedule there will be an option for parents to pay for the second half of the kindergarten day. A final decision concerning free, all-day kindergarten has not yet been made by the MUSD governing board.

For admission to kindergarten, children must be 5 prior to Sept. 1. Children may be admitted who have not reached the required age if it is determined to be in the best interest of the child and the child will turn 5 by Jan. 1, 2014.

Children younger than 5 years old by Sept. 1 must take the early kindergarten assessment. This testing will be done June 5, June 6 and July 15, July 16 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the district office. The test takes about 45 minutes.
