The Maricopa High School boy’s track and field team was able to pull off a close victory during the Ram Invitation on Saturday at Maricopa High School.

The boy’s 4×800 meter relay had the most impressive showing of the day. The team was able to win their event by nearly 100 meters. Coach Brad Chamberlain believes this relay team has a serious shot to win the state title.

“They have a chance to take state if they do what I think they can do,” coach Chamberlain said. “They ran a very easy [8:35] race and won easily. I think they can be a state qualifier or even a state title contender.”

The boy’s team showed tremendous heart and skill during their only home meet of the year. The hurdlers, sprinters and relay teams stood out, but impressive performances and contributions came from nearly every member of the team.

“We don’t usually run [on our home track], but when we do, we definitely try to win the meet,” senior sprinter Elisha Donaldson said. “It’s nice to run in front of our own fans at our school.”

Donaldson was one of a variety of Ram runners to medal during the meet. His finishing times in the 100 and 200 meter dashes were the best on the team. William Blocker, Zach Chamberlain, Longman Pyne, Allen Potter and Kenny Gay also had tremendous performances as well.

On the girl’s side of the track, Saguaro High School won the meet, but the Rams showed great improvement.

The team is still very young, but coaches do expect to see a lot of growth from the underclassmen throughout the season, and for years to come.

Overall, the Rams track and field teams competed well in the extreme heat and intense competition. With the end of the season less than two months away, the Rams will look to continue improving in hopes of making a statement at the state meet.
