Santa Cruz celebrates 6th graders

Sixth-grade promotion at Santa Cruz Elementary School was held Wednesday morning in the school’s multi-purpose room.

The ceremony began with a presentation of awards for perfect attendance, Principal's List, Honor Roll, Student of the Month and Academic League participation. Principal Gina Chaffin addressed the students, as did student council President Lorenzo Ybarra and Vice President Keara Burke, and school board President Torri Anderson and member Scott Bartle. 

Seventy-five students were promoted at the ceremony.

Among them was Jackson Anderson, 12, who said is experience at Santa Cruz was “good, filled with laughter, and I knew my teachers cared about me.”

Jackson will attend Desert Wind Middle School next year, where is looking forward to “not having to form classroom lines before we can go to recess or lunch or anywhere and not having to wear uniforms!”

Amy Sexton attended to watch her son Shane be promoted. “It was a wonderful ceremony – great to see the accomplishments of our sixth-graders,” she said.

“The kids really liked the ceremony – they talked about it all day,” Principal Gina Chaffin said. “It made them feel good to be celebrated.”
