Sequoia Pathway takes Tucson tourney

Sequoia Pathway Academy’s flag-football team took first place in the Jacobs Park Jamboree Invitation Football Tournament in Tucson Saturday

The Pumas beat Copper Canyon 22-6 in the final game of the tournament. Earlier in the day, the team beat M.A.S.S.A. of Tucson in the first game 38-0.

Offensively, Puma star standouts included Francois Jones, who caught six passes for 105 yards and three touchdowns; Jeff Gartener, who ran for 115 yards and had three passes for a total of 80 yards and one touchdown; and Riley Richie, who scored two touchdowns and had 11 passes for 275 yards.

On the defense, Jesus Estrada had an interception and ran it in for a 45-yard touchdown; Ke’saih Hetlege matched his season sack count with five sacks, and fellow Josh Nichols had five sacks and seven tackles (flags).

The tournament also hosted a speed competition to name the fastest athlete to run the 40-yard dash and three Puma players made it to the semi-finals with the overall winner Sequoia’s own quarterback Cole Trimmer.

Cole’s numbers for the day included 340 rushing yards and two touchdowns. He also passed for a total of 460 yards.
