Stacey Boyd: Arizona 200-meter Junior Olympics champ

Maricopa’s Stacey Boyd, II, might be described as ‘faster than a speeding bullet.’ He proved that on June 20 at Mesa Community College when he became the 2010 Junior Olympics state champion in the 200 meter.

Among an elite group of opponents, Boyd (known as “II” since his dad is also Stacey Boyd) outran his competition with a time of 26.24. It was quite a feat, considering that “II” is only 11 years old.

“II” normally trains in Chandler with the Arizona Cheetahs. On the days when the Cheetahs aren’t practicing, he works with Field of Speed, which his dad created as a year-round, multi-sport enhancement program, with experienced speed and conditioning coaches, to improve the sports performance of athletes ages 7 to 18.

Maricopa High School’s Athletic Director Shannon Hull also contributed to Boyd’s success, allowing him access to the high school track to practice his block starts.

“If it were not for Mrs. Hull letting me practice with my dad on my start, I don’t know if I would have won,” said Boyd.

“II” also plays football for the Maricopa Youth Football League and has a 3.5 GPA.

What about the future for this young track star?

“II” hopes to one day attend USC to play football. “My dad and I went on college tours over spring break, and I found USC’s Hall of Fame to be a place where I wanted to be noticed,” said Boyd.

For the 200-meter 2010 Junior Olympics champ, that seems like a realistic and attainable goal.
