The arrival of a major hardware retailer in Maricopa inspired one housing developer to make the city a little more walkable.

Scottsdale-based developer Dominium proposed creating a build-to-rent housing development just northwest of Home Depot on Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway and Stonegate Road, according to documents obtained in a public records request.

The developer submitted the pre-application paperwork last week for review by the city’s development services department. Once reviewed and approved by the city, Dominion may move forward with construction.

Dubbed Maricopa Stonegate, the development would allow for 215 rental units, consisting of two-, three- and four-bedroom plans. Floor plans would range from about 960 to 1,360 square feet.

A project narrative notes Maricopa Stonegate would emphasize creating a “more pedestrian-friendly development environment” with walkways and access to existing and future bike paths. The neighborhood would also provide easy access for residents to use multi-use trails planned around the city.
