The Maricopa City Council honored the Maricopa High School girls basketball team Tuesday night for winning the Division II State Championship.
Councilmember Henry Wade said he attended the final and was impressed with the girls’ poise and focus. “You deserve all the recognition today,” he said.
The Rams were the 12th seed in the playoffs, but pulled off an unlikely run to the state title. It was the first state championship in the school’s history.
“The state championship means a lot to me,” senior Tiara Edmond said. “It means we got everything accomplished that we needed to do as a team. We made it!”
This sentiment was echoed by her teammates as well.
Senior Jamila Rodgers stated the experience “brought us together as a team. We are all really excited about it.”
Junior Raegene Womack was happy about the team finally getting the respect they deserved.
“It means that we get recognition,” Womack said. “We won. We’re the champs.”
This was an historic win for the school and the city of Maricopa. Mayor Christian Price and other members of the board expressed their pride and appreciation for the team’s accomplishment.
