Anthony “Tony" Smith announced today he will run for county supervisor and not seek another term as mayor of Maricopa.

In a released statement, Smith said he will file papers to seek a seat Pinal County supervisor seat in the November 2012 election. Based on increased population numbers, Pinal County will expand from three to five supervisors. Once the re-districting process is completed, Smith is hoping to capture the Western Pinal County district seat, he said in the statement.

Smith and his supporters point to his conservative principles as the key to leading the city through the worst recession in decades. His drive for balanced budgets, limiting the size of government and keeping taxes low makes him the right candidate for bringing about sustainable growth, he said.

In the coming months, Smith will be organizing his campaign and filing papers for election.

“We need a greater voice at the county, state and federal. I have forged relationships and ties with groups at all of these levels. As mayor I worked with many groups and organizations so I can make the connection to make your voices known whether I am working with ADOT, AMTRAK, the EPA, our congressional representatives or others. I want to lead Pinal County into the type of growth that will bring prosperity for decades to come,” Smith said.

“Serving as mayor has been a tremendous experience. I am very thankful to the people of Maricopa for allowing me to be their Mayor. Pinal County is poised for economic growth.  In an effort to bring more prosperity to our region I want to be the voice for our city and neighboring region at the state and national level. I ask for your encouragement, your support, and your prayers,” Smith said.

District 3 Supervisor David Snider said he applauds anyone who puts himself on the line by running for public office.

"Mayor Smith has served the city well as mayor and if circumstances serve him well he will do a good job as supervisor," Snider said.
